The text looks simple. Each double spread has a new person asking to join the others on his boat. '"I'd like a ride," said the cat'. But each way of asking is both different and fitting to the asker's personality. And Mr Gumpy always says 'yes', but always in different words. And he always gives the new passenger a caution, "But you're not to chase the rabbit." And so it goes on until the boat is full and they all do what they were told not to do! It's a simple pattern of talk, but it is the variations that make it so much fun. And the pictures. They might not be the bright colours and sharp clear shapes that are often expected of picturebooks, but you can look at them for hours and not get tired -' just looking and relaxing, or comparing the shapes in the trees and grass and the shapes in the animals' faces and bodies. Burningham uses the combination of left hand-page as long-shot line drawing, and right-hand page as coloured close up, and this makes a nice opportunity for comparing and contrasting. Mr Gumpy sounds 'grumpy' with his constant cautions, but even when the boat capsizes he doesn't get angry. In fact, in a pleasant escape from moralistic stories, the whole disaster is 'rewarded' with a party.
