９月11日のテロを受けて最初に書かれたニック・ストーン・シリーズ。自爆テロリストの家族への「慰謝料」を取り仕切るアルカイーダ系裏金融システムを標的にニックとその仲間がフランスの避暑地を舞台に秘密工作を行う。シリーズ全般に言われるように、本作も諜報活動現場の実態が克明に描かれており、凡百の資料を数多漁るよりも得るものは大きい。何にも増して、主人公がシリーズを重ねるごとに人間的に成長していく様は感動的である。涙でページが霞むこと、間違い無し。
